Have I ever told you I love to travel? Mmmm, maybe I have. The not so fun part about traveling for me, is the airports or bus terminals. So why not try to make things easier learning how to dress to be more comfortable and relaxed?
You know the drill, at airports you have to wait standing in line for long periods of time, or seat in not so comfortable seats, you are wheeling around luggage and getting stuff in and out of suitcases, always paying attention to what’s going on around you, so that you don’t lose a bag or miss a plane, right?
How to dress for comfort
I travel as light and comfortable as possible. I’m sorry, but I just don’t understand (mostly) women who travel with their high heels, tight jeans, short tops and tons of makeup. Why would you make yourself more uncomfortable and cumbersome to travel? Most likely you’re going to want to sleep during your flight.
If it were up to me, I’d travel in my pajamas. But, ok, let’s keep some level of decorum here…
Bottom line here, the idea is to learn how to dress to make things easier and quicker, there are people in line behind you and everybody wants to get to their destination.
Even airport authorities in charge of the country’s security would appreciate you making things run smoothly, so make your life and theirs easier with these apparel recommendations:
Head:
Avoid hats, they will always make you take them off when going through the metal detectors.
Top:
Use something light, but warm, like a long sleeved t-shirt. Airports usually have air conditioning and planes do too, so you might get a bit chilly.
If you need to, bring a light jacket, one that can be easily folded and put away in your luggage and that has an opening in the front with a zipper or buttons. This way it’s so much easier and quicker to go through the metal detectors where they ask you to remove layers of clothing.
Some sources recommend against bras with underwires, but in all honesty all my bras have underwires and I have never had a problem.
Bottom:
Use a pair of light pants, cotton or similar, that will look good, but that don’t cling or make you feel tight. No belts, authorities are always asking people to remove them when going through the metal detectors.
Shoes:
People with bulky soles will always get asked to take their shoes off, so I prefer wearing sandals or slip on shoes. Some people get grossed out about sharing germs, so wear good socks which will also help with the air conditioning on the plane.
Boots or shoes with lost of laces or straps are very cumbersome, I advice against them.
Accessories:
Avoid jewelry, specially metal, they’re going to ask you to remove it. Scarves, I do without them. Chains and other hanging accessories should be avoided to make things easier.
Of course, if you’re doing your cultural travel during the winter, you are going to need a heavier jacket, but whenever possible I recommend going lighter, less stuff, easier to remove layers.

I completely agree; why would you wear uncomfortable heels and fancy outfits for travelling. I’m all over being comfortable while at the airport, especially for those long flights. Lightweight clothing plus a sweater for on the plane if needed – that’s my go-to outfit.
Thanks so much for your comment, Scarlett! You know, one of these days I’m going to interview one of these women and find out why they get all dressed up to fly… maybe they know something we don’t! heeheehee ;-)
Yes! I have never understood the woman who are all dressed up in uncomfortable high heels for a day of travel! It just looks uncomfortable & definitely holds up the security line.
I always plan out my travel day attire for comfort and convenience :)
Thanks – great post!

Definitely, Liz! It’s not like you have to look like a slob, just put a little care into it and be comfortable. Especially so that you don’t hold up the line! ;-)
